Weight of the World

1 Peter 5:7
God cares for you, so turn all your worries over to Him.

"You have a really beautiful smile--when you do smile." I read those words in the back of my yearbook as classmates cheerfully passed around the new publications for signatures. Those last few words nagged at me so much that I contemplated scratching them out.

As I finished my freshman year, I wasn't smiling much. Worrying about the transition to high school and striving to please teachers and peers had left me carrying an emotional weight. Reading those words in my yearbook, I realized I was no longer the person I wanted to be.

If I could go back to my high school years, I wouldn't seek popularity or others' approval. I would try to make positive, healthy decisions and give my best efforts. I would smile confidently and remember that God never designed human shoulders to carry the weight of the world. I might have carried a lighter weight and smiled more smiles. And maybe the comment in my yearbook would have simply read, "You have a really beautiful smile."

In what ways do you try to carry the weight of the world? What worries do you need to let go of? What will you change in the new year in order to become the person you want to be?
