Giving Up Worry
Day 22 of Lenten Devotional Series
Guest Post by Rick Afton, Broadway United Methodist Church
Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not rely on your own understanding. In all your ways, acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths.
For this season of Lent, first I am putting worry away. Worry is something that runs in my family. My Mom was legendary in the art of worry. I have carried this tradition onward. Family issues, work issues, financial issues, eating issues, and issues that are not even in play yet make my list. Although each week I participate in the Serenity Prayer during a Pathway service, I am still worrisome about things I cannot control. I plan to hand this over to Jesus this month. He councils us to not worry as worrying cannot add any more time to our lives. In fact, worry works negatively on our mental, emotional and physical well being. So, with the help of Jesus, I turn this over.
The second thing I am turning over is eating late night snacks. This is a bad habit of mine for years and nothing good comes from it. I am turning it over to Jesus. I cannot do this on my own. I have failed numerous times over the years. To do this will take heavenly power.
Philippians 4:6-7 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which passes all understanding, will keep your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.
